NWS Topeka 2025 Storm Spotter Classes

Have an interest in weather and want to help your community? Become a Storm Spotter by attending one of our virtual or in-person classes!

What are Spotter Classes?

The National Weather Service office in Topeka works together with county emergency managers to offer storm spotter classes in numerous locations across northeast Kansas to prepare for severe weather season. Spotters provide critical information during severe weather events that aid in warning operations at the National Weather Service. If you are interested in helping out your community, or are simply interested in learning more about severe weather, consider attending one of our classes! These classes are held in the evening and last about 90 minutes.

A National Weather Service meteorologist will teach thunderstorm development and structure, thunderstorm safety, and what, when, and how to report information.

A National Weather Service meteorologist presents on severe weather safety during an in-person spotter show.
