In 2015, the Bama General Hospital Camp was established as an informal settlement for displaced persons.

The Camp was designed to inhabit about 15,000 IDPs from across Northeast Nigeria.

By 2018, the Bama General Hospital IDPs Camp had become congested.
GSSSS, BAMA CAMP
The following year, humanitarian organisations reached the town, establishing a new camp at the Government Senior Science Secondary School (GSSSS).
The Bama Initiative
In 2016, through the ‘Bama Initiative’, the government, along with civil society organisations, started the construction and renovation of houses, schools, and other public infrastructure. The aim was to strengthen the town’s capacity to integrate the new and growing population of the people living there. The initiative kickstarted in Dec. 2017.

By 2018, Borno State had approved the return of about 120,000 IDPs to Bama town from Maiduguri.
