2023/24 - Playground communication boards
Hazelwood Park Wombat
This YNB project saw the installation of communication board for Wombat Waterhole. Also known as a ‘playground board’, a communication board is a form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). It is important that we show people with communication difficulties that they are accepted, included, and welcomed, just like anyone using shared community spaces. In a world where communication brings autonomy, belonging, connection, and opportunity for everyone, it is amazing that our community are thinking about others and looking for ways to be inclusive.
2023/24 - Kaurna sculpture
Glenside Park
This YNB project saw the installation of a sculptural piece created by local artist Allan Sumner, a Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Yankunytjatjara man in association with Aboriginal Urban Design.
The sculpture celebrates Kaurna culture and consists of a Corten steel Coolamon (traditional vessel) mounted on a natural rock and second smaller rock featuring a Corten steel Kaurna shield.
The next time you visit the park, we invite you to engage with the artwork and reflect on the rich history of the Kaurna people.
2023/24 - Playground communication boards
Kensington Wama
This YNB project saw the installation of a communication board for Burnside Adventure Park.

In a world where communication brings autonomy, belonging, connection and opportunity for everyone, it is amazing that our community are thinking about others and looking for ways to be inclusive.
2023/24 - Toilet-block mural
Tusmore Park
Who knew toilets could be so stylish? This YNB project proposed a mural for the Tusmore Park toilet block.
The community was engaged on mock designs for the mural, with the final artwork featuring shades of purple to reflect our Council brand colours, along with depictions of the local flora, fauna and scenic beauty of the surroundings. The central squiggles pay homage to First Creek running through Tusmore Park. The cherry on top? Local artist Genevieve Byrt painted this masterpiece. The next time you visit the loo at Tusmore Park, you’ll have a beautiful view to enjoy in this serene and family-friendly area.
2023/24 - Park bench
Toorak Gardens
This YNB project saw a bench seat installed near the corner of Swaine Avenue and Prescott Terrace, Toorak Gardens so passers-by will be able to sit, enjoy a bit of shade and drink in the stunning view of St Theodores Anglican Church. How's that for a slice of heaven!
2023/24 - Play-truck restoration & little library
Webb Street Reserve
This YNB project saw the restoration of the well-loved play truck in Webb Street Reserve. With a shiny fresh coat of paint and new turnable steering wheel the truck is ready for littlies to let their imaginations run wild and drive to far away places.
A new little library was also built by the Men's Shed, and beautifully decorated by a local artist and the neighbouring Rose Park Preschool students.
Little libraries help locals get rid of clutter and share their books that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. They can also be a great way to meet your neighbours, and help build a literacy friendly neighbourhood. The more books available to people the more lives we can change!
2023/24 - Street trees plantings
Deakin Grove
The planting of additional street trees in Deakin Grove fitted perfectly with Burnsides leafy green image. This YNB project has helped the rather stark cul-de-sac become a greener welcoming place to visit and live, and will continue to have cooling effects for residents in the future!
2022/23 - Landscaping
Glenside Park
19 different species of wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs from Council’s biodiversity nursery were planted by a group of residents known as The Environs Club of Glenside. With this YNB project the group aimed to improve the immediate environment and attract wildlife to the area. Good biodiversity creates healthy ecosystems that clean the water, purify the air, maintain healthy soil, regulate the climate and provide wildlife with food and resources. How amazing is that!
2022/23 - Shelter
Kensington Wama
A shelter with a bench seat in Kensington Adventure Park near the playground and within walking distance to the barbeque has benefitted all park users.
This YNB project has ensured a sheltered place to enjoy the park so you can have a get together or party and utilise the free barbeque without having to bring your own table and chairs and offers a shady place to sit for passive supervisors of children at play. How good is that!
2022/23 - Verge landscaping
Rebecca Ave / Old Norton Summit Rd
This YNB project saw landscaping improvements on the corner of Rebecca Avenue and Old Norton Summit Road, in order to improve the entrance to the City of Burnside when travelling from the Adelaide Hills.
The landscaping has helped to not only beautify the area, but it has repressed the weeds and consumed some of the excess water in winter.
The local fairy wrens have also appreciated the planting to help hide from noisy minors.
2022/23 - Rock swap shelf
Tusmore Park
This YNB project saw the installation of a Rock Swap Shelf at Tusmore Park. According to the SA Rocks Facebook group (which has over 52,000 members, as at February 2024), rock swapping is “a little bit of creativity and nature play for kids and parents that live in SA, Australia. Let's go hunting for painted rocks in your local park, or paint some and hide for others to find!”
The process involves painting, dropping, finding, and re-hiding the rocks. The postcode where the rock was decorated is painted on the back of the rock, so that whoever finds the rock knows where it comes from, and how far it has travelled.
Get started today, and make sure to visit the rock swap shelf in Tusmore Park to share your beautiful artwork with others!
2022/23 - Heart defibrillator
Tusmore Park
This YNB project saw the installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Tusmore Park. With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be used by anyone on people who need CPR.
2021/22 - Handrail for stone steps
Michael Perry Reserve
This YNB project saw the installation of a safety handrail at the stone steps in Michael Perry Reserve. The steps can become slippery when wet and it’s important that all users of the park feel safe on our walking trails. Users of the reserve have benefitted from the handrail making navigating the steps easier even in the wet weather!
2021/22 - Shelter
Langman Recreation Reserve
A shelter with a bench seat in Langman Reserve near the playground and within walking distance to the barbeque has benefitted all park users.
This YNB project has ensured a sheltered place to enjoy the park so you can have a get together or party and utilise the free barbeque without having to bring your own table and chairs and offers a shady place to sit for passive supervisors of children at play. How good is that!
2021/22 - Drinking fountain with dog bowl
Kensington Wama
This YNB project saw the installation of a fountain at Kensington Wama. It's an easy way to give a helping paw to the local fauna and our furry friends while ensuring human visitors to the park (especially those having a blast on the playgrounds or sporting grounds) also have access to water.
2021/22 - Little Library
Bell Yett Reserve
This YNB project saw the installation of a little library at Bell Yett Reserve.
Little libraries help locals get rid of clutter and share their books that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. They can also be a great way to meet your neighbours, and help build a literacy friendly neighbourhood. The more books available to people the more lives we can change!
2020/21 - Demonstration verge garden
The Shed
This YNB project saw the installation of a demonstration verge garden at The Shed. This project shows residents how to create attractive, low maintenance, drought tolerant, wildlife friendly verges that use local native plants, tough non-weedy species and/or edible plants. Verge gardens must consider the needs of a wide range of users and issues such as personal safety, visibility, overhead wires, and other infrastructure. This demonstration garden includes informative signage and online information, making it easier for those thinking about starting their own verge garden to enhance the liveability, character and value of their property.
2020/21 - Little Libraries
Tusmore Park
This YNB project saw the installation of a little library at Tusmore Park.
Little libraries help locals get rid of clutter and share their books that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. They can also be a great way to meet your neighbours, and help build a literacy friendly neighbourhood. The more books available to people the more lives we can change!
2020/21 - No smoking signs
Tusmore Park
The installation of no smoking signs has helped keep families to stay healthier and continue to enjoy the fresh air when utilising the Tusmore Park playground. This YNB project saw the installation of signs to remind smokers that they can’t light up within 10m of children’s playground equipment located in a public area. This ban helps to prevent children thinking that smoking is normal.
2020/21 - Basketball ring and keyway
Penfold Park
Penfold Park got an awesome upgrade with the installation of a basketball hoop and key court to keep budding basketball stars entertained. Thanks to this YNB Project you can now shoot hoops and improve your hand-eye coordination while enjoying the surrounds of the park.
2020/21 - Little Libraries
Hazelwood Park
This YNB project saw the installation of a little library at Hazelwood Park.
Little libraries help locals get rid of clutter and share their books that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. They can also be a great way to meet your neighbours, and help build a literacy friendly neighbourhood. The more books available to people the more lives we can change!
2020/21 - Little Libraries
Chapel Street Reserve
This YNB project saw the installation of a little library at Chapel Street Reserve.
Little libraries help locals get rid of clutter and share their books that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. They can also be a great way to meet your neighbours, and help build a literacy friendly neighbourhood. The more books available to people the more lives we can change!
2020/21 - Drinking fountain
Chapel Street Reserve
This YNB project saw the installation of a fountain at Chapel Street Reserve. It's an easy way to give a helping paw to the local fauna and our furry friends while ensuring human visitors to the park (especially those having a blast on the playground) also have access to water.
2020/21 - Rubbish bin & dog bag dispenser
Bradman Park
This YNB project saw the installation of a rubbish bin and dog bag dispenser in Bradman Park. Locals and visitors with furry friends can now take a seat, enjoy the serenity and ensure they leave the park in as pristine condition as when they arrived.
2020/21 - Monkey bars
Albert Street Reserve
The installation of monkey bars at Albert Street Reserve lets kids get physical, build those fine motor skills, and keep their social and cognitive development flowing. Plus, we can't forget about the mental health benefits! This YNB project has been a game-changer for Dulwich kids, especially primary school aged children who still enjoy visiting the playground with their family and friends but needed something a bit more challenging.
2019/20 - Shelter
Tusmore Park
A shelter with a bench seat in Tusmore Park near the playground and within walking distance to the barbeque has benefitted all park users.
This YNB project has ensured a sheltered place to enjoy the park so you can have a get together or party and utilise the free barbeque without having to bring your own table and chairs and offers a shady place to sit for passive supervisors of children at play. How good is that!
2019/20 - Air conditioning
Dulwich Community Centre
Before the redevelopment of The Dulwich Community Centre in 2023 the space lacked decent air conditioning. This YNB project benefitted the many users of the community centre who used the space for a range of activities such as dance, school holiday activities, playgroup, yoga/Pilates, martial arts, rehearsals, and meetings. The installation of air conditioning ensured a safe cool space for the community and visitors of the centre.
2019/20 - Dogs play-pool paving
Conyngham St Dog Park
This YNB project was suggested by the community dog lovers who frequent the Conyngham Street Dog Park and had a brilliant idea to enhance the existing dog play pool area (pool previously provided by dog park users) by installing paving under it. Now you can watch your furry friends make a splash without ending up with a muddy mess.
2019/20 - Solar powered lighting
Conyngham St Dog Park
By lighting up the Conyngham Street Dog Park with the installation of solar powered lamps we have kept our furry friends (and their humans) safe after the sun sets. Plus, this YNB project shines a light on sustainable energy, creating a brighter future for all!
2019/20 - Water for native animals
Beaumont Common
We can be heroes for our furry friends when they're left high and dry without water sources. Whether it's a dry spell, drought, or fire-ravaged areas, animals can be left parched and helpless. Luckily, this YNB project saw the installation of a fountain at Beaumont Common come to the rescue with a refreshing water station. It's an easy way to give a helping paw to the local fauna while ensuring human visitors to the park also have access to water.
2018/19 - Drainage solution
Conyngham St Dog Park
This YNB project was suggested by the community dog lovers who frequent the Conyngham Street Dog Park and had a brilliant idea to make it a year-round haven. By installing a drain in the North-Western corner of the park they have ensured less muddy furry friends (and their humans) during the wetter months.
2018/19 - Netball goal post
Glenunga Hub
This YNB project saw the installation of netball goal post outside Glenunga Hub. There are relatively few netball goal posts in the City of Burnside, so we're thrilled to see more people getting active and having fun with this exhilarating sport. Not only does it require lightning-quick thinking and fancy footwork, but it's also a fantastic way to build teamwork skills.
2018/19 - Sandpit tap
Hazelwood Park
By installing a tap at the sandpit at Wombat Waterhole this YNB project created a playtime combo that hits three major sensory targets in early childhood development. Not only does playing with sand and water improve motor skills and build muscles, but it also gives little ones a chance to develop their social and cognitive skills. Who knew getting down and dirty could be so beneficial?
2018/19 - Traffic island improvements
Queens Ave, Burnside
Thanks to the installation of new walking paths, bench seating and native planting, the community is encouraged to stop and take some respite. This YNB project encourages locals and visitors to really stop, take a breath, and soak up the view of the city, while catching up with their neighbours.
2018/19 - Verge community garden
Watson Ave, Rose Park
By creating a community verge garden, the corner of Watson Avenue and Close Street, Rose Park was transformed into an eye-catching, charming community gathering place. Verge gardens are like superheroes that help soak up rainwater and promote a healthier environment by increasing biodiversity. This YNB project brought in more plants, less concrete, and cooler temps for those hot summer days! It also helped to encourage connection between the local community and the childcare community.
