Speaking Up for the Climate Change in Vietnam

Introduction

Vietnam is known as one of the countries that is mostly affected by climate change. It's Mekong River Delta is one out of three river deltas that is changing rapidly due to rising sea levels, biodiversity depletion, and industrial pollution. Due to the Vietnamese communities awareness of the environmental impacts and climate change is quite limited. Especially the knowledge about biodiversity depletion, which is one of the biggest factors of climate change. But through mural artworks placed in the main areas of Ho Chi Minh City, more people are able to recognize the issues and help provide a solution. The organization CHANGE VN organized a mural painting competition to bring awareness to affects of climate change. CHANGE VN is a organization that encourages and promotes preservation of the environment through education in communications that inspire the Vietnamese community to take actions. The mural competition was placed in the public walls of District 1 and 10 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Some Artists that took Charge of this project

Huong Nguyen, her artist name is Henna Nguyen. Her works are mostly on traditional and digital art. Starting her journey, she taught art for students at school. After her graduation at the Fine Art University of Ho Chi Minh City, she became a Storyboard Artist and Visualizer/Illustrator for multinational advertising agencies. But she has known CHANGE VN which is the organization for this project for a long time. Henna takes part in multiple campaigns that are supported and organized by CHANGE VN.

Therefore, I’m very eager to join this project to promote a more sustainable development future through the use of mural street arts. - Henna

Not only that it provides an opportunity for me to express my artistic passion but the project happens to give me a more in-depth understanding about climate change. - Trung

Message through the Mural

The message the mural is trying to portray is a "comparison between two contrasting worlds": a world that is filled with plastic compared to the natural world.

The interviewer asked Henna what they were trying to portray, she said " I imagine a dark world made entirely of plastic, in which trees are replaced by plastic strokes, leaves are made of plastic bags, and black smoke from burned plastics fully cover the sky without greenery from the ground...

...The ocean would also suffer from this epidemic where there are all sorts of plastic wastes; sea creatures would struggle to survive and some are trapped by plastic rings."

Even though Henna says that there are still beautiful terrains in Vietnam. Climate change is greatly affecting the country. There are many factories and crowded streets that lead to air pollution. Also including the waste that contributes to habitat destruction and species extinction.

Both Henna and Trung hope that their mural will help people understand how critical our roles are to fight against climate change and we need to take immediate actions.

Artists Thoughts on how Art can spread awareness on issues like Climate Change

The different artworks that were in the mural

Both Henna and Trung say that there is power and language in art. Artists are more hypersensitive when it comes to issues like this, they can depict these environmental messages and spread awareness through mediums like art. They say that their mural is an example of effective art, turning a simple street side to convey meaningful messages. Henna says artists use art as a lens to make people question the normal. Then Trung says there were past artist that created bold works to make a statement, so sometimes we need to create even bigger works to get our message across.

We can use painting - posters - infographic to spread the message of sustainable development and encourage people to change their daily habits. - Henna
