Greek Mythology and Some Myths

Greece - Where the Greek Myths took place

Why did the Greeks make myths

The Greeks made the myths in Greek Mythology so they could teach their kids what to do and what to not do. They also made it so they have something to believe in and have their morals in check. Everyone needs something to believe in, and the Greeks were no different and thats how the religion came to be.

The Olympians

Poseidon (Left), Zeus (Middle), Hades (Right)

  • The Olympians are the 12 gods that live on Mt. Olympus. The 12 gods are Hera, Zeus, Hestia, Poseidon, Hera, Ares, Artemis, Hermes, Hephaestus, Hades, Athena, and Aphrodite. How the power was split up was Zeus ruled the sky and was king of the gods, Poseidon was the god of the water, and Hades was the god of the underworld.

Myths and what they mean

The myth of Prometheus the Titan of Fire. The story starts off with Prometheus making humanity from clay. Humanity was very pathetic with being scared of everything, especially the night. So Prometheus gave humanity the gift of fire, now fire was not for mortals it was only for the gods. So Zeus punished Prometheus by him being tied to a rock and a vulture nipping at him for eternity. What this means is that some sacrifices need to be made for others comfort.

The second myth is Hercules and the 12 labors. Hercules has to do these 12 labors to achieve immortality and his guilt would go away. This shows dedication towards a goal and no matter how long or hard it takes try your best to fulfill them.

The third story is of Sisyphus, Sisyphus cheated death and defied the gods on many occasions . One of the biggest piece of trickery Sisyphus did was trick Thanotos the god of death into being chained up for a couple decades. This made people unable to die for however long that was. This taught us to face up to your mistakes no matter the repercussion.
