The impact of Xi'an's rapid urbanization
Abstract:
Xi 'an is an ancient and dynamic city that has undergone tremendous changes in the process of rapid urbanization, which has brought many influences. Among them, urbanization brings convenience to people's life, but many social problems caused by urbanization appear.
Characteristics of Xi'an's urbanization

Xi'an is expanding in a way that combines elements of both compact and planned development, rather than in a completely sprawled manner. (Fei Wang, 2022)
The benefits of urbanization
Economic rising:
Fig.2. The change of Xi'an's GDP from 2011 to 2020
Urbanization has promoted Xi 'an's economic growth. In 2020, the GDP of Xi 'an reached 120.204 billion yuan, an increase of 5.2% over the previous year. This growth is due to industrial upgrading, technological progress and efficiency improvement in the process of urbanization.
The industrial structure has been optimized and job opportunities increased:
Urbanization has promoted the optimization of Xi 'an's industrial structure. Xi 'an has accelerated the construction of new industrialization and formed a modern industrial system of "six pillar industries + five emerging industries + six producer services". In 2023, the output value of pillar industries will reach 740.9 billion yuan, the revenue of emerging industries will exceed 130 billion yuan, and the revenue of producer services will approach 450 billion yuan.
Urbanization creates a lot of job opportunities. With the development of the city, new enterprises and industries continue to emerge, providing residents with more employment options. By 2023, 177,200 new urban jobs will be created in Xi 'an

Actually, from this graph, we can see that with the urbanization of Xi 'an, high-tech industries like: IT, Communications industry and so on are developing rapidly. While the total output value keeps rising, the growth rate is still increasing in recent years
Negative effects
Traffic congestion and population pressure:
Fig 4.the population in urban and rual aera , the urbanization rate.
With the rapid urbanization of Xi 'an, a large number of people from the surrounding rural areas have poured into the city, bringing a large number of labor force and causing great population pressure. In addition, due to the development of tourism in Xi 'an, the population pressure in Xi 'an has further intensified.
The number of motor vehicles owned reached 5,297,300, a net increase of 442,800 over the previous year, and the ownership rate of motor vehicles per thousand people reached 405.05. The road congestion has intensified compared with the previous year. During peak hours, the overall operation of the road network remains in a moderate state of congestion. The central axis, Huancheng Road, the Second Ring Road and Taiyi Road are more prone to serious congestion.
The area of Xi 'an is not small, but the dense urban agglomeration leads to insufficient lanes to cope with the excessive traffic flow in Xi 'an, which eventually leads to serious traffic jams
Environmental destruction
Air pollution: In 2023, the excellent rate of ambient air quality in our city is 62.5%, of which only 63 days are excellent The average annual concentration of particulate matter PM10, particulate matter PM2.5 and the 90th percentile of the maximum 8-hour average ozone were higher than the national ambient air quality Class II standards.
Fig 5. Average concentration of PM2.5 in Xi’an
Solid pollution: In 2023, the total amount of solid waste generated in Xi'an waste was 11,2307,100 tons, of which the general industrial solid waste generation was 5,311,900 tons, the hazardous waste generation waste generation was 315 million tons, the household waste generation was 4,226,800 tons, the construction waste waste generation was generated was 99, the agricultural solid waste waste generation was 1,950,900 tons, and the sewage sludge generated urban sewage sludge.Too many soild waste pollution will Encroach on land ,Pollute the soil and Pollute the water body.
Inequality
In addition, in the process of urbanization, there is also the problem of unbalanced urban development. New urban areas develop rapidly with perfect infrastructure, while some old urban areas are difficult to transform and relatively backward in development. To some extent, the gap between the rich and the poor may be widened due to the unbalanced urbanization
Conclusion
The rapid urbanization of Xi 'an is an inevitable trend of The Times, and its positive impact far outweighs the challenges it faces. In the future development, Xi 'an needs to make reasonable planning and pay attention to environmental protection, cultural inheritance and balanced regional development while pursuing economic development and urban modernization.
