Water Bottle Refill Stations

These are some of the water bottle refill stations in use
Using stations like these instead of purchasing plastic water bottles is a more sustainable option that is better for the environment and your wallet.
Opting for reusable water bottles instead of single-use has a long-term positive effect on the Earth and keeps plastic pollution out of our natural environment and landfills.
This map will enable community members to easily locate stations that they can use.

The Process
We called the cities of Blue Lake, Trinidad, Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna, Rio Dell, Ferndale, and the County of Humboldt to ask for the locations of all their water bottle refill stations.
We then used this information to compile a list of 22 stations and sent that to ZWH
ZWH was able to confirm which ones were sponsored by them - 10 total
Mapping Specifics
We discussed a variety of formatting options with our client but settled on Google as the most accessible platform.
Objectives: simple, accessible, easy to edit and share on social media or in newsletters.
Uploaded the spreadsheet of locations into google after tampering and went back in to sync google's data with each individual location.
The Issue
Zero Waste Humboldt specializes in waste prevention.
The Water Bottle Refill Station project has been an ongoing effort to encourage the use of refillable water bottles and prevent single-use plastic bottles from going to the landfill.
ZWH’s mission, services and community projects stem from a vision of a desired future with 0 waste, sustainable materials management, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Waste prevention is the most effective method to protect our scenic rivers, Humboldt Bay, Pacific coastline, ranchlands, forests and Redwood Coast communities from plastic pollution, litter and roadside dumping.
The Refill-Not-Landfill Network Project project began to encourage the reduction of single-use plastic water bottles and promote the use of reusable water bottles. Since 2016, Zero Waste Humboldt has awarded 10 water bottle refill stations to three local schools and six local governments. Currently, the Refill-Not-Landfill Network Project has saved over 100,000 water bottles from the landfill.
