Rock Garden Picnic area

In 1933, Charles Page, a local designer received funds from the Texas Relief Commission to construct small park amenities like stone tables and outdoor cooking facilities. Page along with Fred Dale worked with landscape designer Mark A. Murray and planned for 1200 shrubs to be planted around the stone-lined pools created by the rock gardens terraces. Murray wanted the rock garden to create a space which would be in bloom all year long. Various plants would be needed for all seasons, these included chrysanthemums for the fall and water lilies for the shallow ponds. All of the plants were sourced from local growers such as Dr. T.S. Painter’s home garden on West 33rd St. Page would assist in the construction of the ponds, creating the shallow stone-lined pools we see today.
