Tour of Chico's Landscapes

Campus Landscape Built in the 2000s
This is a picture of the science building here on campus. It finished construction in 2020 as the newest building here on campus.

Romanesque Campus Landscape
This is a picture of Kendall Hall here on campus. The first picture on the left was taken in April 1927. Almost 96 years later, the picture on the right is taken.

Italianate Cottage
A cottage with an Italianate design. It has a small, cottage size, with Italianate features such as the pillars on the porch, the window that sticks out of the house a little bit, and the design under the part of the roof that hangs over the house.
Prairie
A Prairie consists of, a low, hipped roof, and overall a box-like shape. This is a picture of Glenn Hall on campus, the picture on the left was taken almost 58 years ago in 1965.
Arts and Crafts
This house can be identified as arts and crafts by the beams under the gables, the elevated foundation, and other decorative pieces like the beams for the porch.
California Bungalow
Although this one is very bright, it has all of the distinct features of a California bungalow. The sloped, triangular roof, the porch held up by beams with the roof hanging over it. The thing that really sells it roof over the porch that matches the roof of the rest of the house.
4 Sweet Gums
The main thing that I look for when trying to find sweet gum trees are their very recognizable seeds. Those spikey-looking balls fall from their branches. They are also known for their 5-pointed leaves.
4 Mexican Fan Palms
For me, Mexican Fan Palms are very easy to identify. They're tall and have no leaves all the way to the top of the tree.
Large Deodar Cedar
Deodar Cedars can be identified by their height, cone shape, and branches that hang downwards. This one I found here on campus to the left of Kendall Hall.
Iconic Chico Landscape
Now this may seem like a strange choice, but I believe this is iconic. It's in downtown Chico, which a very popular spot, and whenever you see it, you know exactly what it is and where you are. I'm sure that everyone from Chico knows about it as well.
Main Street Rephotograph
This photo is a lot different. The original was taken in 1930, so almost 93 years ago. There have been trees that have been planted and grown, and there have been buildings on the left demolished and new buildings erected in their place. There have also been other small changes like street lights, stop lights and things like parking meters.
Broadway Rephotograph
I was unable to find the date of the picture on the left, but it looks to be at least 60 years old. Since then, the Chico Paper Co. building has been changed, adding more detail to the roof, and the Diamond Hotel has been changed from a square box to a very detailed and decorative style. Signs have been removed from buildings and more trees have grown.
5th Street Rephotograph
This is the U.S. post office in downtown Chico. The original was taken in 1936. The only differences seen are the trees/plants, stop lights and the post office sign on the side of the building.
Chico Vecino Rephotograph
The house has remained the same since 1912. The only difference is the bushes at the front of the house.
My Landscape Choice
Big Chico Creek, up by Horseshoe lake is one of my favorite landscapes in Chico. Not only is it very nice and a very nice place to go and hang out with friends (during the summer), but it was also the first place I went to when I got here with my new friends.
