About the Author

Growing up, Rybakov was influenced by the culture of his father's orthodox religious community, the  Old Believers.  This initial attraction to Russian history and tradition led him down the path to become a well-known Soviet archeologist and researcher.

Rybakov focused most of his research on Slavic history and was especially known for his expertise on Kievan Rus. Throughout his career, Rybakov participated in a number of excavations in Eastern Europe, authored dozens of consequential publications, and belonged to a number of organizations, including the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the International Committee of Slavists.
