Building on the work of Hammel and Wyly (1996), quantitative data will be complemented with qualitative surveys of physical changes in the landscape of these neighborhoods. In particular, the research team visits the commercial corridors of focus to observe and document changes in the landscape that portend social, cultural and economic change in the neighborhoods. We record vacant properties, new construction, upgrading of buildings, and cultural markers that indicate types of food businesses and the clientele they target.

La Romero's Market

Opened: 2010. Another local staple, this store contains a wide array of Hispanic goods and resources. You can buy a meal while also receiving tax services!

Supermercado El Rey and Michoacanas

Michoacanas opened in 2016; was renamed in 2021.

This local grocery store also functions as a restaurant, which is attached to the back part of the shop. Unable to find authentic Hispanic food items elsewhere, this shop is the perfect bridge between Charlotte communities.
