Here at the San Angelo/Abilene Forecast office, we have a team of meteorologists constantly analyzing current meteorological/hydrological conditions and weather model data to create timely and accurate forecasts for the public and our partners. This way, if and when hazardous weather materializes, we are able to more confidently issue advisories, watches, and warnings to alert those we serve. In order to effectively fulfill our mission of protecting life and property, we work with the local emergency management community, media, and government partners at all levels to create and sustain invaluable, life-saving partnerships.

We continually work to be leaders in science, outreach, and training for the West Central Texas community.

Our History

September 1885

A Signal Service (SigSvc) Office was built in Abilene to provide meteorological observations for the area. It was then transferred to the Weather Bureau in 1891, upon it's creation.

July 1935

A Weather Bureau Airport Station (WBAS) was established at the municipal airport in Abilene.

October 31, 1947

The Weather Bureau Office in San Angelo began operations on the second floor of the old airport building at Mathis Field. The office included 6 employees issuing forecasts and severe weather warnings for a 14 county area in West Central Texas.

December 1953

WBAS Office in Abilene relocated to the new airport.

February 8, 1954

Weather Service Radar (WSR-1) commissioned for the WBAS Office in Abilene (ABI).

June 23, 1954

WSR-1 installed at Mathis Field in San Angelo (SJT). This radar only cost $1.00 as it was a surplus item donated to the Weather Bureau by the Military.

1963

A mobile Upper Air Station in Abilene operated from February to May as a part of a severe weather research project. Full time observations would begin in the early 1970s.

July 22, 1965

Weather Bureau Office in San Angelo moved to newer and larger building just south of the airport control tower.

March 25, 1972

WSR-3 commissioned for WBAS ABI.

August 27, 1977

New WSR-74C began operation in Abilene.

October 21, 1977

New WSR-74C began operation in San Angelo.

October 1, 1978

San Angelo NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) began 24 hour broadcasts.

February 13, 1996

New facility opened for the NWS San Angelo office (about a mile from the previous location). This was a part of the NWS Modernization period. Improvements included the new SJT WSR-88D put up next to the new office (where it currently stands), new ASOS (Automated Surface Observation Systems) put in across the area, and expanded staffing to 18 employees (compared to the previous 6). Operations were expanded as the WBAS in Abilene was closed and operations were handed over to the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in San Angelo, making the new county warning area (CWA) its current 24 county area.
