Mental Health in Edlers

Scholar Observations

  • Prominent mental health issues among the elderly population include – depression, schizophrenia, manic depressive, panic disorder and extreme anxiety,  2011 RHS Presentation 
  • The CORE program has been vital for closing the gap in mental health services for the elderly,  2011 RHS Presentation 
  • As of 2013, the CORE Program only had 2 years of funding left through MVH,  2013 RHS Presentation 
  • A lack of consistent mental health services creates a barrier for folks who might otherwise report/not experience elder abuse,  2014 RHS Presentation 
  • Primary care does not provide mental health care to elders,  2011 RHS Presentation  &  2014 
  • Insufficient number of MH professionals available to diagnose when elders need additional support in procuring or preparing foods and meeting their basic needs (avoiding self-neglect),  2020 RHS Presentation

Barriers to Services

  • The high cost of mental health services is directly tied to the high cost of housing,  2013 RHS Presentation  &  2014 
  • A lack of consistent mental health services and inpatient care exacerbates those experiencing homelessness, often their condition is too severe for them to live with family or maintain a rental property, and so there is nowhere for them to go,  2015 RHS Presentation 
  • There needs to be more counselors available for individual counseling given the nature of these topics (SUD),  2016 RHS Presentation 
  • There is a need for standardized screening for mental health, especially for postpartum women,  2017 RHS Presentation

    • Less than 20% of women who reported postpartum depression mentioned it to their PCP
