Community TIKTOKS
Working with local communities to broaden their knowledge and hear their inputs.

For our project we produced three TikTok videos, for the RUSH website. Each video covers different themes. We collaborated with local high school students to hear their opinions and also broaden their knowledge. Main themes include Safe Bus Stops, Big trees, Invasive species.
Main goals:
- promoting environmentally friendly decisions through social media
- Create GIS maps that provide visual depictions of our environment
- Developing community perspective through our project.
Doing so will enable better enviromental health, as well as personal health.

Taking the bus is a form of daily commuting for many people in our community. This is why it is important that the individuals using the bus have access to the bus stops and feel safe while they wait for the bus. For our first TikTok we asked high school students "what makes a bus stop safe and inclusive for you?" Here are some of their responses.
Safe Bus Drawings
We asked highscool students to draw a memory map of safe inclusive bus stop. The goal was to allow students to process what a safe bus stop means to them.

We used the responses that the students provided to produce a map that highlights certain features of bus stops. Some of these features being trash cans within 10 meters of the bus stop, benches at bus stops, and benches with overhead covers.
Here is a zoomed in version of the map
Steps:
- Plotted all bus stops in Victoria.
- Added neigbourhood boundaries
- Plotted every trash can within 10 meter radius of the bus stop.
- For the Downtown area we used google maps' street view feature to plot whether or not a bus stop has a sheltered bench.
For our second TikTok we decided to test the knowledge of these high school students by seeing if they are able to identify invasive species. We did this in a FUN quiz format.
For our final TikTok we decided to give folks a tour of some of Victoria's biggest and iconic trees.
The goal was to inform the Victoria community about the story that old trees have to tell, and immerse people into nature.
We mapped out some of these trees
Through the process of making the videos we have gained valuble insights not only about each theme but also about our community.
