#30DayMapChallenge 2022

Steer's Map team took up the challenge together and this is the result of their mappy month of November

The idea, by Topi Tjukanov, is to create maps based around different themes each day of November using the hashtag #30DayMapChallenge.

Check out  https://30daymapchallenge.com  for more on the challenge or the Steer Design for Movement twitter feed  https://twitter.com/Steer_DfM/

The Steer team took part last year and we found it a great way to build teamwork, review and build upon each others work in a more open, non-time-critical, way. It also led to better connections across our teams and offices as the group was open to all who were interested in taking part, whether they were designers, GIS users, cartographers or just had a good idea!

1

Day 1: Points

It's November so get ready for lots of maps from our geospatial team... Here we are with our first map from  @Steer_DfM  team at  @Steer_Group  for the  #30daymapchallenge  Day 1: Points Not only is Sheffield the "Steel City" and the "Greenest City", it is also the "Home of Football"

by Patrick - using QGIS and Illustrator

2

Day 2: Lines

Bostonians love their Dunkin' Donuts coffee, so it makes sense that almost the entire subway system is within walking distance of a store. Fun Fact: Back Bay Station has two  @dunkindonuts  stores in the building.

by Brian - using ArcGIS and PowerPoint

3

Day 3: Polygons

Map: Polly Gone - A map of Bird Flu cases across the UK, highlighting where new cases have occurred from Monday 31st Oct to Thursday 3rd Nov 2022. Data from  @APHAgovuk  31/10/22 and 03/11/22  @DefraGovUK  Design by  @cdlseldon   @Steer_DfM

by Clare - using  APHA data  and Illustrator

4

Day 4: Green

Sheffield’s 22,600 acres of green space, which helped it rank as the UK's greenest city by NatWest last year. The city performs highly in green energy generation, energy usage and EV ownership.  @SheffCouncil   @sheffgreencity   @SheffieldWire

by Luke - using QGIS

5

Day 5: Ukraine

The Ukrainian Grain Association  @UkrGrain  appeals to the UN Secretary General and world leaders to resume the Grain Initiative for safe Grain Corridor work for the next year.

by Alex and Oli - using Illustrator

6

Day 6: Network

Sustainable networks are at the heart of  @Steer_Group , so here’s a sneak peek of the current WIP update to  @BikeShareTO  which incorporates the Cycling Map networks to link all the new bike stations and help users plan longer journeys better.

by Clare - using Illustrator and InDesign

7

Day 7: Raster

Excellent data is available from Landmælingar Islands showing National Land Survey data for Iceland.  http://lmi.is  A simple calculation of Slope using a Digital Elevation Model using a simple white to black colour ramp  #Iceland   #mono

by Oli - using QGIS

8

Day 8: OpenStreetMap

It's great to use OSM data - but how many people actively give back? Clare recently managed to integrate her workflow via OSM, so that what she creates is available to all. Here's the output versus edit view including all the new woodlands.

by Clare - using OSM edit

9

Day 9: Space

The planet Earth is blue and there's nothing Steer can do… …except for design a map showing the locations of Earth impact craters using data from the Earth Impact Database.  #bowie   #lyrics   #spaceoddity   #craters   #impact

by Patrick - using Illustrator

10

Day 10: Bad Map

This is Bad. New analysis shows 40% of the UK’s most productive agricultural land is used to grow food for farm animals INSTEAD of for people.

If we used these crops to feed humans, millions of hectares of arable land could be released for other purposes.

by Alex - using Illustrator

11

Day 11: Red

How red is the UK? A simple Heatmap using OS Open Names where the place contains ‘red’ in the name.

by Oli - using QGIS

12

Day 12: Scale

Fractals are shapes with never-ending patterns. The smaller the scale, the more details you see. Coastlines act in a similar way, which means their true length can seem undefinable.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal

by Brian - using ArcGIS and Vectr

13

Day 13: 5 minute map

Putting the effort into good templates is so worth it if you’ve lots of similar maps to create! We have 26 offices so we set up our  @Avenza  MAPublisher template to make it quick! See Clare’s  @bcsmaps  tutorial  https://youtu.be/54Vu_uVDYAg

by Clare - using Illustrator

14

Day 14: Hexagons

Using local accessibility analysis the hexcell map below calculates how many essential and desirable services local residents can reach within a 15 minute walk. More on our research paper here  https://dfm.steergroup.com/15-minute-cities-research   #London   #Accessibility

by Oli - using ArcGIS

15

Day 15: Food or Drink

Where does my food come from? Looking at the contents of my fridge I mapped the origin to see how far food had travelled, in total 140,000 kilometres! Follow us for the interactive map later in the challenge Created  @bcsmaps  hackday

by Oli - using ArcGIS Online

16

Day 16: Minimal

Some maps are useless at telling you where you are. Sometimes they just exist to be coloured in.

by Brian - using Vectr

17

Day 17: Map without a computer

Map 1*: Here’s the traditional Cartographic lectures’ tool used for explaining global projections… reimagined on a chocolate version!! This will not last long...

by Clare - using Terry's Chocolate Orange *note: See Day 30 for a remix version

Map 2: Who’s doesn’t a bit of Lego… Oli and his son have been doing this for the best part of the year and finally finished in time for this challenge!

by Oli - using Lego

18

Day 18: Blue

Rivers and surface waters of GB So interesting to note the gaps in what is mostly blanket coverage

by Oli - using QGIS

19

Day 19: Globe

Experimenting with ArcPro Global Scene and air route data showing how our continents, countries and places are connected. A mass network until...    #Antarctica   #Globe   #flight   #travel   #movement   #routes   #airspace   #greatarcs   #direct   #maps   #GIS

by Oli - using ArcPro Global

20

Day 20: My Favourite

Clare’s favourite projection is Azimuthal Equidistant which shows flight distances from the centreed one location outwards as straight lines. Here’s a version she made for  #theprojectioncollection  this year. Tutorial on  @bcsmaps  YouTube

by Clare - using Illustrator and MAPublisher

21

Day 21: Kontur Data

Working across the globe, population data at a small geographic level can be difficult to source from official sources so it's great that datasets such as Kontur Population Data is available widely. Here's a map for Eswatini (pop/hex)

by Oli - using QGIS

22

Day 22: NULL

Quite a few of our maps so far have had interesting patterns in the NULL data. Sometimes a story lies in what’s missing not what’s there…  #noairspace   #nowaterways   #nofootballpitches   #noexports

by various

23

Day 23: Movement

Using an FOI data request for journeys taken on London’s e-scooter trial, Luke mapped where people are moving TO and FROM on this fun mode of shared transport. The longest distance scooted in a single ride was 43km and took 4 hours!

by Luke - using QGIS

24

Day 24: Fantasy

Anyone can create a magical realm. All it takes is a roll of the dice! Check out this fantastical land created by Brian using just dice and imagination. See comments for dice key. sources:  #BellTopoSans  font,  #dice ,  #pens

by Brian - using dice, pens (sharpies), and paper

25

Day 25: Two Colours*

Hexcell based map of mainland Britain showing the change in station entries and exits between 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 using ORR  @railandroad  Estimates of Station Usage data

by Tim - using ArcGIS *note: See Day 30 for a remix version

Day 30: Remix

The team have a few remixed/updated versions for this day. Scroll down for more on these maps.

Day 30: Remix versions

Day 30: Remixed versions of previous maps

Map 1: Change in Station Entries & Exits

Day 25 - Two colour Remix: Steer's Rail team revisited this map to look for trends and highlight some of the more interesting stories coming out of this data. Here's the updated version.  Read more about the remix here

Map 2: London E-scooter Hires

Day 23 - Movement Remix: To enhance the story we removed any locations with a difference in hires less than 15, which removes anomolies and most of the points that are outside of the study area. Plus we included the ten participating London borough boundaries in green.  Their e-scooters were available for hire in: Camden, City of London, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth (north of the borough only), Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Tower Hamlets (limited parking at Canary Wharf and some TfL stations) and Westminster

Map 3: Orange World

Day 17 - Map without a computer Remix: Flattened chocolate orange globe!
