The Alpine fault and our Active faults
The fault line which runs down the South island is called the Alpine fault. The Alpine faults measure around 500km. The Alpine fault is one of the largest sources of seismics of earthquake hazards in Aotearoa New Zealand. There are three fault lines in the south island the locations are Franz Josef where the Alpine fault ran straight through.Wairau Awatere are other locations with fault lines. historically when the fault ruptures it produces an earthquake about magnitude 8. A fault that has ruptured repeatedly in the past whose history indicates that it is likely to rupture again.
