An enthusiastic and good team player with skills in Geographic Information Systems and proficiency in Esri's ArcGIS products.

 ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Racheal, a Ms.c Student studying Geographic Information Science and Cartography at Western Illinois University expected to graduate in May 2023.

I am passionate about leveraging my geospatial skills to provide valuable and accurate information for decision makers and various stakeholders. I have almost 2 years experience learning and working on hands on projects in the GIS industry ranging from raw data collection to spatial analysis and visualization of results.

Strengths and Interests: Esri's ArcGIS products, Cartography(Map making), Data visualisation, ArcGis Online, Disaster management, Utility GIS and Project management.

GIS PROJECTS

Quincy Community needs assessment 2021

The project basically involves implementing GIS to address the 2021 Community Needs of Quincy ranging from housing to land use and socio-economic development. I worked specifically with a group of colleagues on the housing assessment, using ArcGIS to identify locations of housing types based on parcels, city data, and census data. This web map was published for public consumption, and it greatly impacted the community and stakeholders' decisions.

Experience

MAPS

The West Africa boundary polygon was given a drop shadow effect which further intensifies the boundary between West Africa and its surrounding countryside. This was achieved by changing the solid stroke of the polygon to a gradient stroke. The employed projection for this map is the Albers equal area Conic projection, which is an equal area conic projection best suited for land masses extending in an east-to-west orientation at mid-latitudes. Shape along the standard parallels is accurate and minimally distorted in the region between the standard parallels and those regions just beyond. Generally, this projection preserves shape and area.

Reference Map

This Reference map of the capital of Maldives was created in ArcGIS desktop. Maldives is known as a low-lying island tourist country, is expected to have a lot of buildings that are related to tourism and attractions, and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean. My choice of this location is due to my interest in tourist attractions and the water surrounding the island makes it aesthetically beautiful in all the aerial images I have seen. Malé Boundary polygon is the highlight of this base map because I used a watercolor style to give a sandy beach land effect. This watercolor style was added to the software manually by clicking on the add style icon. This influenced my decision on the general theme of the map.

Poster Map (Thematic)

The purpose of this Poster map is to describe a disaster and an outbreak in the most easiest way to understand. The first outlook of the map was aimed at showing the description of the disease alongside the statistics showing the case rate in the United States. The major cartographic decision made is to make the Poster map visually appealing while keeping things organized. I employed the Sans serif typography on the map. Also, the chosen color scheme ranges from tones of grey to black and red.

Reference Map

The purpose of this reference map is to demonstrate my cartographic labeling conventions learnt in one of my graduate courses. An unlabelled map of Mcdonough county with various map layers was done using annotations in ArcGIS pro. The labelings done on the map includes cities, county roads, state highways, U.S. highways, State Parks, Lakes, Rivers, and Railroads. The highway shields were added manually using point notes.

Thematic Map

This thematic map shows the incidence rate of Covid 19 in Illinois. The 3D effect seen on this map was achieved using an Arc scene in ArcGIS desktop. The choropleth map was converted to a local scene because of its size and extent. In order to extrude the prisms to be more obvious, an extrusion expression where the incidence rate was multiplied by 50 was used.

Heat Map

This heat map of Chicago crimes distribution was created based on the 2021 crime data for the city of Chicago. The heat map was clipped to the city limits of Chicago

Thematic Map

I made use of classic cartographic techniques to emulate a hand-drawn historical survey plan. A familiar aesthetic makes the map immediately accessible and appealing. Styles and symbols were integrated manually to emulate a hand-drawn historical map of the WIU (Western Illinois University) campus and its immediate surroundings. An  Esri's watercolor style  created by John Nelson was used. Though the map looks dated, the map is made with current data and tools. You get a sense of the city layout— its central business district, parks, residential areas, and thoroughfares. Engaging cartographic symbology allows the map to stand on its own with no need for a legend. An existing geodatabase containing various feature classes of all WIU features was used for the creation of the cvlassic map.

Poster Map

This Poster Map shows the bombing missions durring the Vietnam war From 1965 to 1975, the United States and its allies dropped more than 7.5 million tons of bombs over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In December 2016, the U.S. Department of Defense released digital records detailing those Vietnam War bombing missions. More than 1 million missions from data downloaded from the U.S. Air Force Theater of Operations (THOR) database were symbolized. The map that shows bombing missions during the Vietnam War. This map might be of interest to military and history enthusiasts but the primary goal is to make it easy for the audience who are probably people who aren't experts on the war and will need some context and explanation for what they're seeing. The map data is historical
