Welcome to Environmental Justice, a newly interactive online eLearning tool to help students learn about the connection between systemic inequality and environmental degradation. This program is geared to meet Common Core Standards for grades 9-12.

This is Module 2 of a series by Bay Academy, a division of BayEcotarium. Our mission is to enable conversations on climate resilience and ocean conservation globally, while inspiring actionable change locally by protection and preservation of the San Francisco Bay and its ecosystems, from Sierra to the Sea™.

This module contains an introduction and 3 lessons. Each lesson begins with an engagement activity, includes a note-taking device, and ends with a quiz to help students test their knowledge.

Lesson 1: The Story of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard

Activists in the Bayview Hunters-Point neighborhood are worried that their neighborhood is radioactive. In Lesson 1, students will look at images and articles to construct a timeline of what happened at Hunters Point.

Learning Goals: Students Will Be Able To create a timeline that integrates and evaluates multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media to address the question: What happened at Bayview-Hunters Point?

Lesson 2: The Local Impacts of Toxic Waste

In Lesson 2, students will look at articles, toxicology reports, and medical information to gather information about the impacts of radioactive pollution on the Bayview Hunters-Point community.

Lesson goals: Students will be able to use scientific evidence to write a descriptive paragraph answering the question: How does radioactive pollution at Bayview-Hunters Point affect the environment and human safety?

Lesson 3: Taking Action

In Lesson 3, students examine case studies of environmental justice in other parts of the country. By studying other environmental success stories, students will have the tools to decide the best way to stand up for local environmental justice issues.

Lesson goals: Students will be able to describe a case study and compare it to the injustices in Bayview-Hunters Point. They will use that knowledge to take concrete action against environmental injustice in the SF Bay Area.
