Mukilteo 76th Street SW Safe Routes to School Project
SR 525 to 44th Avenue W | City of Mukilteo
Welcome!
The City of Mukilteo is excited to announce the 76th Street SW Street Safe Routes to School Improvement Project!
The City of Mukilteo received a “Safe Routes to School” grant from Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to increase pedestrian safety along 76th Avenue SW adjacent to Olympic View Middle School and near Mukilteo Elementary School. The Safe Routes to School Program is a comprehensive approach to encourage school children to walk and bike to school, and provides funding for cities to make infrastructure improvements that increase safety for school children.
Project Goals
- Improve pedestrian mobility and connectivity between surrounding neighborhoods and adjacent schools and facilities
- Improve safety for pedestrians along the corridor
- Increase safety while crossing SR 525

Project Area
The project area is along 76th Street SW from SR 525 (Mukilteo Speedway) to 44th Ave W. The project also includes pedestrian enhancements on SR 525, adjacent to Olympic View Middle School and near Mukilteo Elementary School.
As you scroll down this Story Map, the project will be shown on the interactive map. If you are viewing this story on a cell phone, tap on the maps to interact.
Current Conditions
76th Street SW is approximately 27 feet wide, with one travel lane in each direction. The south side of the road has asphalt shoulders, and the north side of the road has either sidewalk or asphalt shoulder.
76th Street SW is part of a walking route for students attending Olympic View Middle School and nearby Mukilteo Elementary School, but sections of the street are missing sidewalk and do not have ADA-compliant curb ramps.
This curb ramp is not ADA compliant.
At the east end of 76th Street SW, there is no pedestrian connection to 44th Avenue W. To access the sidewalk along 44th Avenue W, pedestrians must walk on the narrow shoulder along 76th Street SW, and there is no defined location for crossing the street.
There is an existing Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) to cross SR 525 adjacent to Olympic View Middle School. A bicyclist vs. car crash occurred at this location a few years ago.
Because of a steep slope, there is a switchback ramp connecting SR 525 to Olympic View Middle School. The ramp is not ADA-compliant because it does not provide enough landing spaces, which are flat areas for people to rest in when they are using the ramp.

Project Summary
The project includes several upgrades to keep pedestrians and school kids safe while walking along 76th Street SW and while crossing SR 525.

Sidewalks and Curb Ramps
The project includes:
- Installation of new sidewalks to fill in gaps and complete the sidewalk network from SR 525 to 44th Avenue W.
- Construction of new ADA-compliant curb ramps and replacment of non-compliant curb ramps along the corridor.
Curb Ramp Progression
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB)
The project includes installation of a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) on SR 525 to facilitate safe crossing of the busy state route. A PHB stops traffic with a red light when a pedestrian pushes the button.
This animation demonstrates the light cycles on a PHB. The yellow lights begin flashing when a pedestrian pushes the button.
Ramp Improvements
The project also includes upgrading the switchback ramp connecting the pedestrian crossing at SR 525 to Olympic View Middle School to make the ramp ADA accessible. The ramp will be widened and an additional landing space will be added.
Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB)
The project will also install a Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) with marked crossing on 76th Street SW to connect pedestrians from sidewalk on north side of the road to proposed sidewalk on south side of road. The new sidewalk will connect to existing pedestrian facilities on 44th Avenue W.
The RRFB will operate the same as the current RRFB on SR 525. When a pedestrian wants to cross the street, they will push the button to activate the flashers which catch the attention of drivers.
RRFB currently at SR 525
Project Schedule
This project is currently in the design phase, and construction is planned to occur during the summer of 2021 while school is not is session.
