Taft Street, Sycamore Drive to 36th Street
August 2022
Welcome
The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) has heard that this section of Taft Street needs traffic calming measures and better bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. Based on this feedback ACHD has initiated a study to develop and evaluate alternatives to improve Taft Street for all users. ACHD wants to work collaboratively with the neighborhood to determine the appropriate improvements.
What We Heard
ACHD conducted a survey in December 2021 and gathered valuable input from the public. Through that process, we heard that residents desire connected bicycle and pedestrian facilities and would like to see traffic calming along Taft Street.
In June 2022, ACHD conducted a virtual open house and presented three alternatives for consideration and feedback.
We heard you!
Following input from the June outreach, ACHD discarded Alternative 3 (sidewalks and shared bicycle/travel lanes). We also made refinements to Alternatives 1 and 2 to address some frequently heard comments. These included:
Alternative 1: Sidewalks and Bike Lanes
- Reduced on-street parking from continuous on both sides to alternating between the north and south to lessen property impacts
Alternative 2: Sidewalk and Multi-Use Pathway
- Reduced the buffer between the roadway and pathway in some areas to minimize property impacts along Taft Street
Alternative 1
Sidewalks and Bike Lanes
Alternative 1 includes two travel lanes, dedicated bike lanes, alternating on-street parking between both sides, and attached sidewalks.
- 6 foot sidewalks on both sides
- 7.5 foot parking in some locations
- 5 foot bike lanes on both sides
- Bulb-outs
- 10 foot travel lanes
Advantages:
- Separated bicycle and pedestrian facilities
- Parking on both sides
Disadvantages:
- Bike lanes adjacent to on-street parking (potential conflict with parked car doors)
Alternative 2
Sidewalk and Multi-Use Pathway
Alternative 2 includes two travel lanes, on-street parking on the north side, a multi-use pathway on the south side and attached sidewalks on the north side.
- 7 foot sidewalks on the north side
- 7.5 foot parking in some locations, on the north side
- 10 foot travel lanes
- 10 foot multi-use pathway on the south side
Advantages:
- Wider sidewalk on the north
- Narrower roadway (shorter crossing and more traffic calming)
Disadvantages:
- Potential conflicts with pathway and driveways
- Parking on the north side only
Please remember: The concepts we are presenting are not a final design. If approved by the Commission, ACHD will design the project later and the design will be presented to the public for input.
Survey
Let us know what you think!
Please use the survey below to let us know which revised alternative you prefer. Following this outreach, ACHD will refine the recommended alternative to add modern pedestrian ramps, connections to Sycamore Drive and 36 th Street, as well as transitions to existing facilities.
