Getting to 30x30

A Grassroots Map of Priorities to Protect 30% of California's Lands and Coastal Waters by 2030

A Plan to Protect People and Nature

In 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom committed California to the goal of conserving 30% of the state's lands and coastal waters by 2030. The Governor's commitment is part of an international effort to conserve natural habitat across the globe to stave off the worst impacts of climate change and protect biodiversity. Importantly, 30x30 also includes the the goal of creating equitable access to nature's benefits and honoring the Tribal sovereignty of California's Indigenous communities. (Photo: Jennifer Jewell)

What to Protect and Why

To reach its 30x30 goal, California must durably protect six million acres in less than seven years. California's Pathways to 30x30 report identifies three key objectives:

  1. Protect and restore biodiversity
  2. Expand access to nature
  3. Mitigate and build resilience to climate change

Deciding which lands and waters to conserve on our way to 30x30 is key.

Locally Informed Conservation

Over the past year, the Power in Nature coalition worked to identify potential 30x30 projects focused on four priority areas:

  • Biodiversity
  • Climate Resilience
  • Tribal Coordination
  • Equity/Access

The group also considered acreage and project readiness to help ensure the viability of its recommendations. The following map provides a tour of proposed projects by Power in Nature region. It will be a living product that can be updated over time as more projects come online.
