Lake Pend Oreille

GLO Record of the Week for May 10, 2020

Welcome to the GLO Record of the Week for the week of May 10, 2020. This week we take a journey to Northern Idaho to learn about Lake Pend Oreille. The Exterior Boundary survey plat of the lake, approved on May 14th, 1894, is shown below.

Exterior Boundary Survey Plat

This unique plat displays the exterior boundaries of Lake Pend Oreille. The townships included on the plat fall between the 11th and 12th North standard parallels, West of the Boise Meridian.

A standard parallel, also known as a correction line, is a line extended East or West from the Principal Meridian. These lines are typically at intervals of 24 miles North and South of the baseline, and are established to correct the convergence of range lines.

The GLO record collection includes a variety of survey types that illustrate the official boundaries of our Nation's lands. These records capture the history of the landscape as the United States expanded westward, and document some of the land's impressive geographical features.
