Post-Impressionism

What is Post-Impressionism

The art period is called Post-Impression. The geographic location is France, and Post-Impressionism was between the years of 1886-1905. Some major artists were Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri Rousseau. Some major artistic moments were that people started to use emotion in their paintings using line and colour. Some influential individuals and groups during 1886-1905 were Eugene Debs who popularized civil liberties, workers’ rights, peace and justice, and government regulation of big business. Another was Florence Kelley who helped fight for children's rights, minimum wage and the 8 hour workday. Finally Margaret Sanger ho helped treat and fight for women's health. Some major world events during 1886-1905 were...

  • The U.S. produced more steel than Great Britain for the first time ever.
  • Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890 which made the government get more silver per month which made it so farmers didn't have to pay as much.
  • The Panic of 1893 was an economic depression that made the unemployment rate increase and stock prices were decreased
  • 1903 The Wright Brothers built the first ever sucsessful airplane

Elements and principles of design seen in the piece and how they work together to create a specific feeling or communicate a message in the piece. Are there elements and principles that characterize the period as a whole?

One element is that the painting is dark which symbolizes how post-impressionism isn’t a great period, and that there are not as many bright colours it can symbolize not as much happiness.

Are there symbols that you see in the art piece?

Throughout the whole painting there are suns and swirly things almost like wind.

Identify and explain some of the ways in which artistic traditions in this time has been maintained, adapted, or appropriated.

The tradition is that emotion is shown and because it is a darker background it feels like it’s around the panic 1893, because it is around that time, but the colours in the background are cool/darker colours which makes the impression of something isn’t good.

Identify and explain some of the historic economic factors that influenced the creation of art during the period that you chose?

The economic factors were that everyone was scared of what was going to happen with the panic of 1893 and how there was a lot of stocks dropping and the unemployment rate being increased.

Why did this piece stand out to you? What do you like about it?

This piece stood out to me because I have heard about this painting before. Also I have heard about the artist who made this painting. What I like about this is that you can feel like the painting is in more of a darker stage. What I mean by that is it is a darker painting darker colours are being used. Also I like the contrast of the colours because it makes the mountain (or whatever the darker thing is) look more the part that Vincent Van Gogh wants you to look at which it does.
