Administrative data snapshot of population and housing

Experimental population data

The following interactive maps present population information sourced from the Administrative Data Snapshot of Population and Housing (30 June 2021).

The interactive maps provide an overview of:

The Administrative Data Snapshot of Population and Housing (ADS) is a new, experimental release of population and housing data built from administrative data sources. SA2s and LGAs are defined by the  Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3 .

Like the Census, the ADS provides a snapshot of Australian people and houses at a point in time but has a smaller and different set of person and housing characteristics.

For more information about population counts from the ADS, please see the ABS release  Administrative data snapshot of population, 30 June 2021 .

Number of persons by age SA2

This map presents the predominant population age groups for an area (Statistical Area Level 2).

Colour indicates the most common age group for each area (see map legend). For example, a circle shaded dark green indicates the most common age range for an area is 0-14 years old.

Circle size indicates the size of the population in each area. Areas with larger circles have larger populations relative to areas with smaller circles.

Clicking a circle reveals a detailed breakdown of all categories.

Number of persons by age LGA

This map presents the predominant population age groups for an area (Local Government Areas, 2021).

Median income by SA2

This map presents median income for persons in an area (Statistical Area Level 2).

Colours indicate variations in median income, with higher median income areas shown in green, and lower median income areas shown in purple.

Clicking a circle reveals a detailed breakdown of people's main source of income.

Income data is for persons aged 15 years and over.

Sources of income by SA2

This map presents the sources of income for persons in an area (Statistical Area Level 2).

Shading indicates the predominant source of income for an area. Circles indicate the predominant government pensions and allowances for an area.

Clicking on a circle reveals a detailed breakdown of all categories.

Income data is for persons aged 15 years and over.

Length of time at current location by SA2

This map presents the predominant length of time people have lived in an area (Statistical Area Level 2).

Colour indicates the most common length of time people have lived in an area (see map legend). Most areas are predominantly made up of people who have remained in their current location for 5 years or more (shaded yellow). Inner city and outer city locations tend to have the highest recent transitions into that area (shaded green or red).

Strength of predominance is indicated by shading. Regions with strong predominance have a darker shading. This occurs when a large majority of the population fall into one category. Regions with weak predominance have a lighter shading. This occurs where the population fall into a wide range of categories and there is only a small majority.

Clicking an area reveals a detailed breakdown of all categories.
