Methodology
For each service line, or clinic type, the following procedures were applied.
- A combination of Census designated populated places in Maryland (536) and randomly generated points in each Census tract, zip code, and county (4,069) are set as the origin point from which distance and duration to each clinic is determined and the shortest distance is saved.
- For each area of interest (Census tract, zip code, county, and hospital system), or AOI, the average distance and duration is calculated based upon those places within each AOI.
- Statistical analysis (standard deviation) of the average distances and durations are used to categorize each AOI as within the state's average, above, well above, or highly above.
- The various data sources are joined together and visualized for ease of understanding.
