"Globally, one fifth of the Earth's land area (more than 2 billion hectares) ... are degraded, affecting some 3.2 billion people, driving species to extinction and intensifying climate change."—United Nations (un.org)
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals—adopted by all United Nations member states—serve as a blueprint to protect the planet and improve the lives of all people, with no one left behind.
Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 15 considers ways to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

The United Nations established targets for achieving and measuring progress towards SDG 15 including:
By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world
By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development
Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversityand, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species
