Strangely enough, the next stage for government-supported Chinese students to study in America began with the Qing's loss in a war and a devastating damage to the dynasty.
In 1901, the Qing Dynasty supported the Boxer Rebellion to fight against foreigners and colonizers. Eight Countries sent troops into Beijing to quell the rebellion. Photo courtesy ) They forced the Qing Dynasty to sign the Boxer Protocol , requiring them to pay war reparations totaling up to $333 million U.S. dollars, of which the US shared 7.32% [10].
