Dr. George W. Bengtson, Sr. Historic Tree Trail
The trail is adjacent to Town Creek Park and stretches from Gay Street to Wright’s Mill Road.

Dr. George W. Bengtson, Sr. was a two term member of the Auburn Tree Commission as well as an Associate Dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University. Upon reading a magazine article about the Historic Tree Nursery of American Forests, he envisioned a similar historic trail of American trees in Town Creek Park. He acquired funding to purchase many trees and solicited donations for others. The Historic Tree Trail grand opening was held in 2006.
On November 27, 2012, Auburn Mayor Bill Ham declared it to be “George Bengtson Day” in Auburn to honor Dr. Bengtson’s contributions to the Auburn Tree Commission and the Auburn Beautification Council on whose board he represented the Tree Commission for many years. The Auburn City Council officially named the Tree Trail in his honor in 2017.

The Dr. George W. Bengston, Sr. Historic Tree Trail is maintained by the Auburn Tree Commission. The Auburn Tree Trust is just one tool that the Auburn Tree Commission uses to help maintain Auburn’s tree population. A gift to the Tree Trust is 100% tax deductible and goes to the planting of trees on public property. Planting a tree can honor a family event, a friend or a special occasion. The Tree Trust will take any amount of donation to go toward planting trees in Auburn. We no longer provide individual plaques for trees, but we will notify you of the location of the tree you helped to plant once your donation has been used.
