Wildlife Management Area System

New Jersey’s Wildlife Management Area (WMA) System, administered by Fish and Wildlife’s Bureau of Land Management, preserves a diversity of fish and wildlife habitats from Delaware Bay coastal marshes to Kittatinny Ridge mountain tops. The Wildlife Management Area Explorer is a tool to allow users to identify various resources available on WMA lands. It provides interactive maps of infrastructure assets such as shooting ranges, dog training areas, boat ramps, fishing access sites, roads, parking areas and more that are available to hunters, trappers, anglers, and other fish and wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. In addition, the application summarizes a myriad of natural resources present on individual WMAs, including listed wildlife and plant species, habitat types, hunting and trapping zones, and state and regional habitat priorities relevant to conservation planning across the Wildlife Management Area System.

Ranges  (archery, shotgun, muzzleloader and centerfile rifle) are maintained on select WMAs by NJ Fish & Wildlife's Bureau of Land Management

Ranging in size from the 0.68 acre Delaware River Fishing Access Site at the Pennsauken WMA to the 33,000-acre Peaslee Tract in Cumberland and Cape May counties,  Wildlife Management Areas  provide countless outdoor recreational opportunities for New Jersey residents and visitors from out of state. Helping make these areas accessible are approximately 1,000 miles of roads. Presently there are more than 358,000 acres in 122 areas, and new properties and additions to existing properties are continually being added. This acreage represents more than 44% of New Jersey’s state-owned public open space. Please note that state WMAs and facilities are “carry in – carry out” and trash/recycling receptacles are not provided; please plan accordingly to not leave any trash or recyclables behind.

Upland Bird Stocking

The Upland Bird Stocking Areas application is an interactive map that allows users to identify areas stocked with game bird species, the number of birds stocked and the stocking schedule for each area.

Male Pheasant on Wildlife Management Area

Every year, New Jersey Fish and Wildlife  stocks  pheasants on 23 Wildlife Management Areas across the state, as well as Fort Dix (limited) and the Delaware Water Gap NRA. Additionally, quail are stocked on Greenwood Forest, and Peaslee Wildlife Management Areas. Efforts to provide a quality pheasant hunting season begin in spring, when Fish and Wildlife staff sow fields with forage and cover seed mixtures. Among other benefits to various species of wildlife, these mixes provide ample cover for pheasants when they are stocked in the fall.
