Beacon Park Yard Virtual Community Walk

About the Beacon Park Yard (BPY) Regional Framework Plan and the GIS Story Map

The  Beacon Park Yard Regional Framework Plan  is a planning initiative led by the Boston Planning & Development Agency that will complement and inform the  Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) Allston Multimodal Project . The Beacon Park Yard Regional Framework Plan will develop a community vision to explore and refine opportunities unlocked by the replacement and redesign of the Allston Interchange.

On Dec 03, 2023 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM we met at Swissbakers Allston for a Community Event with mapping activities, a “write your own story”, and other opportunities to learn more about the BPY Plan. We look forward to a Community Walk when the weather is nicer, and have created this GIS Story Map as a virtual way to experience the route and share your experience!

Timeline

There has already been significant work across the state to advocate for and support this project, but there is a long road ahead to achieve our shared goals of economic competitiveness, resilience, affordability and equity.

The BPY Plan will establish a regional, community vision for dense urban development that provides the City capacity, landowner value, and community benefits to realize a transformational infrastructure and development project at the site shown in the map. Our vision is inclusive and equitable infrastructure and development projects at Beacon Park Yard.

Three Scales

We have the opportunity to consider important topics at three scales:

Commuter

The influence of a new commuter destination, championing access to opportunity and vital assets including the Charles River and former mashlands, historical sites of indigenous culture and stewardship.

Regional

The benefits of a robust multi-modal regional network increasing transit access and connections between historically redlined communities to the north and south of the Pike.

Local

The local impacts of this transformative infrastructure and development project and how Harvard University as the sole landowner of the BPY site can partner with the City and others to provide a mix of uses and cultural spaces reflecting the vision for a diverse Boston community.

Instructions

The goal of this activity is to understand how you use, experience, and relate to the BPY area today so that our community-based narrative guides future planning. We will use your responses at each step to create maps of the assets and gaps around the site and identify opportunities and partnerships needed to create a plan that establishes new systems and structures of accountability for economic and cultural well-being. Please enjoy your virtual journey around the site!
