Leonard's Skipper

Endemic to much of the Northern United States.

Natural History

Species interactions

Habitat

Leonard's skippers are found in prairies and grassy areas with little shade. This skipper is not found in wetlands like many other at-risk skippers.

Population Dynamics

  • Very little is known about population structure, but there are many populations that have become increasingly isolated with land use changes post-European colonization.
  • The species is fairly widespread, and may be highly mobile.
  • Studies on dispersal, population sizes, and population structure are needed.
  • Surveys for the species in the Great Plains would be beneficial to understanding the status of the species in the United States.

Listing Status

The  Leonard's skipper is listed as globally secure , and it is ranked as apparently secure in Ohio. However, Ohio reported this species as  a species of greatest conservation need  in 2015.

One subspecies, the  Pawnee skipper (H. i. montana) , is federally listed under the Endangered Species Act as threatened and is endemic to Colorado.

Population Trends

We analyzed four sites for Leonard's skipper with varying trends in phenology and abundance.
