Rocks From Around the World

What is the rock cycle?

The rock cycle is a process where rocks turn into different types of rocks. All rocks start as magma and can turn into other types of rocks.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed from the sediments or pieces of other rocks. When rocks are broken down or weathered, they are carried away and are usually deposited on the bottom of an ocean or lake. Layers of sediment compact together (under the weight of the layers). Sedimentary rocks can also be cemented together. Sedimentary rocks are the only type of rock that can have fossils. Sedimentary rocks can have layers. These rocks are often light and can break easily. Sedimentary rocks usually have dull surfaces. Examples of sedimentary rocks are sandstone and limestone.

Intrusive Igneous Rocks

Intrusive Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools deep under the Earth's surface. If the magma cools fast, small minerals are formed. If the magma cools slow, larger minerals are formed. These rocks are not layered or banded. These rocks might have shiny mineral surfaces. These rocks are very hard and heavy. An example of an intrusive igneous rock is granite.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks

Extrusive igneous rocks are formed when lava cools above the surface of the Earth. These rocks can be dull or shiny. These rocks are usually only one colour (red, brown, black or grey). These rocks may have holes left by gas or air bubbles. An example of an extrusive igneous rock is basalt.

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed when rocks are put under a great deal of heat and pressure. The rock stays solid and doesn't melt completely. Metamorphic rocks often have bands or stripes. The surface of the rock can be shiny or dull. These rocks are usually a mixture of white, black, and/or pink colours. OR, these rocks can be one colour (red, brown, black, or grey).
