Northern Michigan's October 2021 Climatology

Above normal temperatures for all the climate sites for the month of October, who ran 7.1° to 9.2° warmer!

  • All climate sites recorded above normal temperatures for the month of October. Sites ranged from 7.1° to 9.2° above normal! With Sault Sainte Marie recording their warmest October (55.3°) since records began back in 1888 and beat 1900 which previously had the warmest October at 54.5° for their average temperature. All other sites were in the top 5 for their warmest October on record.
  • With the northern stream jet set up to the north of northern Michigan quite a bit in the month, most system storms tracked north of us. This also resulted in the lack of colder northwesterly winds, which in turn, did not produce as much lake effect precipitation that usually occurs more often in the month of October. The favored lake effect locations of Sault Sainte Marie, Gaylord, and Traverse City, were all below normal for the month; while Houghton Lake and Alpena were near normal.
