About BIMS

How it Started

Black In Marine Science (BIMS) started as a week in November 2020 to highlight and amplify Black voices in the field and encourage younger generations, while also shedding light on the lack of diversity in marine science. After the harassment of Black birder  Christian Cooper  and #BlackBirdersWeek, the need for  #BlackinMarineScienceWeek  was evident. It started with a  tweet  from Dr. Tiara Moore and grew to a team of organizers putting together an online event. After the rewarding turnout of #BlackinMarineScienceWeek, we decided it was time to form a non-profit and continue with our goal of highlighting and amplifying Black voices!

How it's Going

In our continued effort to highlight and amplify Black voices, we have created 2  YouTube series  that air Fridays at 10 am PS/1 pm ET and Saturdays at 8 am PT/11 am ET. These series,  BIMS Bites , and  BIMS Bites Kids  focus on small “bites” of marine science topics presented by Black scientists to communicate science worldwide! For those looking for a deeper dive into marine science join us on the last Friday of every month 6-7 pm ET/3-4 PT for our  BIMS Dives  conversation series featuring a prominent Black scientist answering questions on the most pressing ocean issues.

If you are a Black marine scientist please  join  our network! We would love to have you. If you are an ally please help us amplify Black voices and consider donating today to help further our cause.
