Protecting California's Salmon
In 2024, DWR is collaborating with its partners to support our salmon population while supplying millions of Californians with water.

The Salmon Story
Managing California’s Water Supply and Supporting Salmon
While a changing climate impacts California’s water supply, it also takes a severe toll on the salmon populations in our state.
Climate extremes of drought and flooding mean California’s water needs must be managed to minimize the impacts on our environment while meeting the needs of our communities’ health and safety, our economy, and agriculture. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) is taking many steps to support salmon in collaboration with our key partners.
DWR leads or supports more than 120 ongoing projects to protect endangered species in California's waterways, including salmon. These projects include restoring critical habitat for salmon and other fish species, improving salmon migration corridors to and from the ocean, and increasing our monitoring efforts so we can better track the status of populations and devise new strategies to improve their status. This StoryMap highlights just a handful of those 120+ projects benefiting our state's salmon population. DWR will frequently update this StoryMap to highlight additional projects – check it often for the latest information.
