Solid Waste Collection Rules

Garbage, recycling and street trash are all picked up at anytime of day on the designated day for your street. The crews for garbage, recycling, and street trash may be separate, therefore the times for each item picked up may vary. All Garbage, Recyclables, and Street Trash should be placed on the edge of the sidewalk, if there is no sidewalk then on the edge of the street on the rear or side of the residence on designated pickup day, (refer to map). City Ordinance prohibits placement of refuse items on sidewalks or on streets.

Please have ALL ITEMS for pickup out by 7am on your designated day.


Garbage, Recycling, and Street Trash Routes

Garbage

  • All garbage must be placed in a secured plastic bag, and stored in a strong sound can of no more than a 35-gallon capacity, with a cover, and 2 strong handles.

Recyclables

  • All Items should be placed in the proper recycling bin for pickup (see "Proper Recyclables" below)
  • If you have items that will not properly fit in the designated recycle bin, you may place them in a plastic bin beside the recycling containers. The additional container will be left for you to use again.
  • Recyclable bins are available at city hall with a deposit fee. *If your property has been recently annexed into the City there is no deposit fee*

Street Trash

  • Includes but not limited to boxes, small appliances, small furniture, toys, books, etc. Any item that is not recyclable and that would not be placed in with garbage.
  • Heavy items may require an arrangement for special pickup with a minimal charge.
  • Residents can schedule a Utility Trailer to be brought to their residence for a fee.
  • Items that cannot be placed curbside or in utility trailers for pickup: Car Motors, Building Materials, Large Appliances, Car Batteries, Paint, TV Picture Tubes, Oil Drums, Hazardous Materials, Tires, Tree Stumps, and Limbs over 4" diameter

Recycing

The following items should NOT be placed in the garbage. They should be put in the proper recycle bins: (PETE and HDPE numbers can be found at the bottom of the containers).

  • Newspapers, magazines, inserts, phone books, paper cores (toilet paper and paper towel rolls), office paper, cereal, and other food boxes, envelopes, paper bags, softcover books, hardcover books (small quantities)Containers: aluminum beverage containers, steel food cans pet food cans, milk containers #1 and #2, plastic bottles (not including motor oil, antifreeze or pesticide containers)
  • Glass: food and beverage containers (beer bottles, wine bottles, soda bottles, pasta sauce jars, etc)
  • Soap / detergent bottles, plastic bottles - #1 and #2
  • Corrugated cardboard (please fold flat, McDowell County will not accept cardboard that is not broken down)
  • Paper products must be clean with no oil or grease contamination. Plastic and glass containers should also be rinsed before being placed in the recycling bins.
  • Pizza boxes are NOT accepted for recycling

Yard Waste, Brush, and Leaf Vacuum Routes

Yard Waste and Brush

  • Grass clippings, leaves, and small trimmings are to be bagged and placed near the edge of the sidewalk or street.

    • Limbs need to be placed neatly near the edge of the sidewalk and must not be exceeding 4 inches in diameter.
  • The City will NOT remove any trees, limbs, stumps, or trimmings cut by contractors, businesses, or non-profits organizations located in residential units eligible to receive yard waste and brush collection.

Leaf Vacuum

  • The City provides a leaf vacuum service during the months of October, November, and December on scheduled days. Please refer to the map on the right.
  • Residents must rake leaves to the edge of the street or sidewalk for leaves to be vacuumed.
  • Residents can also pick up designated leaf bags during the months of October, November, and December for the use of leaf litter collection, which will be picked up by the City during normally scheduled time.
  • Leaf bags should be placed beside regular garbage.
