Introduction
The state of Montana heeded the call for patriots when the United States entered into the Great War. Enthusiasm was great in Yellowstone County which included Billings, Montana. This newspaper clipping is from the front page news of the Billings, Gazette on April 5, 1917. This was one day after the United States entered World War 1. The article states that every organization in the city would be asked to participate in rallying support for the cause. A home guard for those too old to serve would be established at this meeting and those men would organize an effort to recruit troops.

The article above from March 20, 1918 shows that there were issues with the draft. Many attempted to escape the draft by not reporting, or were unaware they were to report for duty. This article describes most of the men on the list living in Billings, Montana. The majority on this list were said to be American, while others from different nationalities.
