City of Southport Local Historic District

Southport is one of the oldest communities in coastal North Carolina and is rich in history. For more information, see the map below.

In September 2022, the Board of Aldermen adopted a historic preservation ordinance creating the Historic Preservation Commission. Since then, the Historic Preservation Commission and City staff have been working diligently on the boundary for the local historic district overlay and applicable design standards.

In the next few months, the Historic Preservation Commission will be finalizing the design standards and the overlay district. Next the draft overlay district and standards will be reviewed by North Carolina's Historic Preservation Office. Following state review, the standards and overlay district will be reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission and a recommendation to approve or deny will be made to the Board of Aldermen. The Board of Aldermen will hold a public hearing on this item in the future (TBD). The agenda for each Board of Aldermen meeting can be found here:  City of Southport, NC City Government, Board of Aldermen, and Staff

The Historic Preservation Commission meetings are open to the public and are scheduled for every first Wednesday of the month at 4:00 PM at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall, 113 W. Moore St. Please feel free to join us over the next few months as we finalize the overlay boundary and design standards. Each agenda is posted on the city's website here:  Historic Preservation Committee - City of Southport
