Bioswales

These bioswales, planted by FSC students provide an environmentally friendly drainage system. The channels filter and absorb rainwater, reducing pollution and preventing flooding. The bioswales include plants such as Iris, Sweet Flag, and Hibiscus that are capable of withstanding stress and don’t require fertilizer. Working with the natural landscape underscores Farmingdale's commitment to sustainable land practices, enabling natural and built systems to work together.

The campus center, which holds many campus and community-wide events, holds a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification. This means it was built to be a healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings

Centralized Recycling Stations

Across campus, there are numerous centralized recycling stations that are labeled as "Trash", "Paper", or "Bottles/Cans". You can generally find one set on each floor of each building on campus. If you're unsure what goes in each bin, be sure to check the pictures showing what is accepted in each stream!

This bus stop is serviced by Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) and Suffolk Transit Authority. This bus stop can connect you to places across both Long Island counties.

FSC Shuttle Stop: Laffin Hall

Campus shuttle is a free form of transportation for all students, faculty, and alumni. The shuttle stops at Laffin Hall, FSC Aviation Center, and Village of Farmingdale LIRR Station. Shuttle service runs multiple times throughout all weekdays during the fall & spring semesters.

Giving Garden

The giving garden grows a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Food from the garden has been given to the Campus' Food Pantry providing students who may be experiencing food insecurity with fresh produce.

Hydration Stations

The majority of our buildings on campus feature a hydration stations. This includes Lupton Hall, Greenley Library, Laffin Hall, School of Business, Whitman Hall, Gleeson Hall, Thompson Hall, Campus Center, and Horton Hall. These multiuse water fountains not only offer fresh filtered drinking water but also incorporate functionality for effortless water bottle refills, reducing single-use plastic use. Memorial Oak

The 100+ year-old historic White Oak tree serves as a memorial for those Americans and individuals from allied nations who fought in WWI. Soil from every state and Serbia, Russia, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Montenegro, Japan, Portugal, Italy, San Marino, Rumania, Greece, Panama, Cuba, Siam, Liberia, China, Brazil, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Haiti, Honduras, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Jamaica was collected to plant this tree on June 4th, 1921.

FSC's bike rental program, Pedal Share, came to campus in the spring of 2023. Pedal Share allows students to rent bikes, offering accessible and sustainable transportation. The Campus Center bike rack is located between the CC and Quintyne Hall.

FSC's third Pedal Share station is located outside of Nold Hall. What better way to get a workout in your day than taking a spin around campus?

Smart Energy House

The smart energy house is dedicated to providing the college with sustainable energy. The house includes a smart meter to control appliances remotely, solar thermal technology to heat water, an electric vehicle charging station, 20 solar panels, and a “wise” system that controls equipment to conserve energy.

Solar Carport

FSC's Solar Carport was installed in 2014. It features 20 chargers, with permits available to any campus community member who wishes to charge their vehicle there. You can find more information on the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Center's website.

Teaching Gardens

The teaching gardens offer hands-on learning for students to learn more about horticulture and the environment. Students receive plant identification, botany, entomology, soils, and horticulture training.

Wind Turbines

Farmingdale State College's campus features three wind turbines. Wind turbines generate electricity by producing energy for electric generators. FSC also offers a certificate program designed to train students for careers in wind energy technology, further promoting the use of sustainable energy.
