MaineDOT is working to develop a high-resolution, dynamic, and probabilistic model of flood risk from storm events and projected sea level rise along the Maine coast.

The department has updated design standards for culverts and bridges to account for climate impacts.

Our team is administering the Maine Infrastructure Adaptation Fund, which will provide $20 million in funds to 13 communities around the state to protect vital infrastructure from the effects of climate change.

MaineDOT is working with Efficiency Maine Trust to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the state. Together, we have installed more than 200 Level 2 plugs and 28 Level 3 plugs across the state.

We have prepared a Plan for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment (PEVID) describing how funds will be used to expand the EV charging network across the state. Our goal is to provide Level 3 chargers within at least 50 miles on state-owned roads.

We have supported e-bike programs, including the bikeshare in Portland and forthcoming statewide library bike and e-bike bikeshare pilot programs in partnership with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.

MaineDOT is the primary funder for the first four battery electric buses and associated charging infrastructure for Greater Portland Metro and Biddeford Saco Old Orchard Beach Transit.

The department is promoting efforts to provide alternative modes of transportation, such as the ride-share program GO MAINE and Workforce Transportation Pilot.

We are in the process of installing solar arrays on I-95 at Exits 109 and 112 in Augusta as well as at the state-owned property at the Augusta Airport. These arrays will provide enough renewable energy to power the nearby state office complexes and save state taxpayers millions of dollars over the next two decades.

We are expanding our use of renewable fuels by using biodiesel to power trucks and biofuel for heating.

MaineDOT’s first hybrid ferries are under construction, and we are committed to considering hybrid ferry options for all future ferry replacements.
