Dismantling the Founders' Monument

The next step in the rematriation of Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe

The critical work of dismantling the Lawrence Founder’s Monument, created and dedicated in 1929, moved quite quickly in late July and early August of 2023. At the start, we had no idea how difficult or time-consuming this work would be, but we were committed to taking whatever time we need to ensure the safety of Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe. The first step in this process was to fence in the area of Robinson Park in downtown Lawrence so that we could control access to the Rock and ensure the safety of the community while the dismantling work proceeded.
