The Unknown Photographer ...then and now
Compare a selection of Sidney Fletcher's images, captured from glass negatives and now uncovered after a century in the dark
Village sports day, Yapton, West Sussex (Photo #2)
- Could the winner be Sidney Fletcher's son Dennis?
- Dennis Fletcher was born 1901.
- The runners look about 7-10 years old, so the year could be 1908-1911.
- Was it 1908? Perhaps the sports day took place to celebrate the 1908 London Olympics ?
- The 1908 Olympics were originally to be hosted in Rome, but were relocated following a violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906 that killed over 100 people.
- In 2021, the field is essentially the same, with the distinctive flint-walled barn in the distance.
- There are now much larger farm buildings with some housing at the end of the field.
