Young GLOBE Water Investigators in Croatia!

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić Elementary School in Virovitica

The town of Virovitica developed along the Ođenica creek, which is a right confluent of the Drava river. It comes down from the mountain Bilogora and passes through our small town ...

Participants in GLOBE program since October 2005.

2

Ođenica stream

Location of GLOBE station "Martinova postaja" for investigating water.

3

Young Globe students in action

Students measure water asperity on "Martinova postaja".

4

Urban coastal planning of Ođenica stream

Over the last five years, part of the banks of the stream have been covered with stone.

5

Natural shores

Species such as the green frog (Pelophylax sp.) and the turtle (Emys orbicularis) are retained on the untidy, natural shores.

Ođenica stream, March, 2021

To our great regret, we often find plastic bags around the stream and our hardworking students pick them up! :)

Our young GLOBE students are often investigating water in our city creek.

Students measure water asperity (March, 2021).

Water asperity determination.

Measurement of water temperature and pH.

After hard work, students (Ivano, Igor and Luka) are resting. :)

    • Why do you like to observe the water body you selected or collect data there?

Because it is extremely important to monitor the condition of the stream and increasingly frequent urban changes, and also because we grew up with this stream.

Along with the stream in March, you can also find various springs and other flowers!

    • What is the importance of the water body for environment and community?

In terms of the number of species, Ođenica, compared to other real natural waters, is not so rich, but if compared to other habitats in the city, it represents a wealth for the city and significantly affects the diversity of species in the city of Virovitica.

Over the last five years, part of the banks of the stream have been covered with stone. In areas such as this, a decrease in the number of animal species has been observed. More sensitive species eventually disappear and move to other parts of the Ođenica. Urban planning is carrying on today.
