The Journey of Captain James Cook's First Voyage
Captain James Cook was a world explorer well-known for mapping the east coast of Australia.

In the Beginning
Captain James Cook was born in Yorkshire, England in 1728, the 27th of October. He grew up poor with his father as a farm labourer. At the age of 18 instead of following his father's footsteps, he joined the merchant navy. In August 1768 he left Plymouth, England to set off to Tahiti to see the Transit of Venus. A man called Joseph Banks accompanied him along the way. He was a botanist who wanted to find new living in New Holland. (Australia)

Tahiti
Captain Cook was sent to Tahiti to see the transit of Venus. He did not go back to England and was told to find the great southern land, Terra Australias Incognita. Now called Australia.

New Zealand
Captain Cook Landed on the coast of New Zealand. He was going around the coast of New Zealand to go to Australia. The first attempt to enter New Zealand was greeted by fighting and violence from the Maori people. Tupaia, a priest who he met in Tahiti helped him deal with the problems he had with them.

Stingray Bay ( Botany Bay)
In April 29th 1770, Captain Cook landed in Stingray Bay. He started mapping the east coast of Australia from there. Joseph Banks the botainist collected many samples of the living in Australia. It was then they saw kangaroos and wattle and new wildlife there.

Australia (New Holland)
The Endeavour landed in the Great Barrier Reef in 1770 in April. Like New Zealand, the first encounters were a bit violent. He found that his ship was sinking fast so he threw the six heavy canons overboard. It took Captain Cook and his crew three months to rebuild the ship.

End of the First Voyage
He returned to Dover in England in 1771. After a successful voyage Joseph Banks recorded all the flora and fauna they saw along the way. Although Captain Cook did not go back to Australia he became famous. Joseph Banks too became famous for discovering new and unnamed wildlife in Australia.
Did you know that Captain Cook did not get the best cabin in the Endeavour? Joseph Banks did. Unfortunately, he was super tall and had to sleep outside the cabin. He also had 3 dogs. 1 died, 1 got sold away and the remaining one got to have the whole cabin to himself.
