Energy and Water Conservation

Mile High Youth Corps - Americorps NCCC

Welcome to the Mile High Youth Corps Energy and Water Conservation Program!

Our mission is to assist income qualified families in reducing their electric and water bills.

We install high efficiency light bulbs, toilets, programmable thermostats, shower heads, and sink aerators for FREE!

In the year of 2019 we were able to save our clients over 14 million gallons of water, enough to fill 24 Olympic size swimming pools.

We also helped our clients save over 580,000 kW/hr's, enough energy to power 10 average Colorado homes for 7 years.

Our program provides Corpsmembers with a 2-week technical training program, which includes learning how to install all our high-efficiency fixtures and learning how to work with our community in the most impactful way.

Corpsmembers are also provided career-readiness opportunities throughout their term, giving them a bright future to look forward to.

Not only do we strive to help our community outside of Mile High, but we also aim to create our own community within our program. Our Energy and Water team makes it a priority to build strong and healthy relationships with each other to get the most out of our Corpsmembers.

With a strong team comes great teamwork, and with great teamwork comes great service!

Even though we encountered some barriers due to COVID-19, we at Mile High continued to follow our mission statement: Help youth make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences. We volunteered at multiple locations in the Denver area to continue to serve our community in these trying times, including our local food pantry.

Our other volunteer sites can be found on our service map below.

Lightbulbs

Counting costs to operate and replace light bulbs listed below.

Traditonal Incandescent bulb's cost over 20 years: $211

CFL bulb's cost over 20 years: $54

LED bulb's cost over 20 years: $34

Thermostats

According to Energy Star, about 45% of a home's energy is used for heating and cooling.

A programmable thermostat can save you up to 30% on heating and cooling costs.

Recommended temperatures to set your programmable thermostat to are 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

Water fixtures

For every 2 people taking one 10-minute shower a day, using our high efficiency shower heads would save $126 per year.

Our high efficiency sink aerators can save you between 50-75% more water usage compared to traditional aerators.

Toilets

Our Ultra High-Efficiency Toilets use 0.8 GPF, or about 4.5 gallons daily per person.

Toilets made between 1980 and 1992 can use 2.5-3.6 GPF and about 18.8 gallons daily per person.

Toilets made before 1980 can use 5-8 gallons per flush (GPF), and about 48 gallons daily per person.
