Women-In-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges (WTREX)

WTREX is an intensive two-week training exchange that combines practical live-fire training with indoor learning and discussion.

WTREX strives to advance participants’ qualifications and experience in wildland fire operations. Host agencies benefit by support in the implementation of prescribed fires by offering resources, training and collaboration opportunities for fire professionals and land managers while reducing wildfire risk on the landscape.

Prescribed Fire aka Good Fire

Fire, a natural part of the environment, is required by some forests to remain healthy and thrive. Prescribed fire is the planned use of fire under predetermined weather and fuel parameters to obtain specific management objectives. Learn more from  NC State Forest Service  about how prescribed fire benefits forests and wildlife, and helps reduce the impact of wildfire hazards

For every WTREX event, an image is developed as a T-shirt design and sometimes is used for stickers and other printing. For 2023 this design was created by  Bess Taylor .

In The Media

Due to the uniqueness of this event there have been many media engagements over the years. These help bring to light not only the challenges that exist in wildfire but also the success of this event and it's influence.

Here are a few articles and videos from past WTREX events.

Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges are supported by Promoting Ecosystem Resilience and Fire Adapted Communities Together (PERFACT), a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Forest Service, Department of the Interior agencies—Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service—and The Nature Conservancy. PERFACT also supports the Fire Learning Network, Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network and the Indigenous Peoples Burning Network. TREX events both draw upon and support the efforts of these strategies to help communities and landscapes across the country become more resilient to wildfire and related challenges.
