History of Russia's Aggression Against Ukraine

Civilians Continue to Suffer as Russia’s Aggression Against Ukraine Intensifies

In 2014, after millions of Ukrainians protested for a democratic and European future, Russia manufactured a crisis, invaded Ukraine, occupied Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, and orchestrated a war in eastern Ukraine using Russian personnel as well as local proxy forces that it leads, trains, supplies, and finances.

According to the UN , seven years of fighting has resulted in:

Four rounded rectangles display statistics from the conflict. The first rectangle says “14,000 total deaths” with a medical cross icon. The second says “7,000 civilians wounded” and has a person icon next to the statistic. The third says “1,500,000 internally displaced” with an icon of three people. The fourth says “100,000 Ukrainians fled abroad” and has a globe icon.

By the end of 2021, 2.9 million Ukrainians remained in desperate need of assistance and protection in a humanitarian catastrophe that demands more attention from the international community.

Russia’s recent escalation of harsh rhetoric, hybrid tactics, disinformation, and military build-up of 100,000 troops or more along Ukraine’s border and in occupied Crimea threaten Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as peace and stability in Europe as a whole.

Russia’s Actions Disrupt and Threaten the Lives of Millions

Resolution

Russia Must De-escalate Tensions and Work with Ukraine and the International Community to Achieve Lasting Peace

Russia’s escalatory and threatening actions along Ukraine’s border and in occupied Crimea risk the lives of millions of people. Its continued hybrid campaign further threatens the internal stability and safety of Ukraine’s citizens.

A large-scale increase in the conflict would result in a significant deterioration of humanitarian conditions and have far-reaching regional consequences, including large-scale migration, and hindering the international community’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 global health crisis.
