A Story Map about Recycling Centers.

Which county has more recycling places Wicomico or Worcester?

What is recycling?

Recycling is converting waste into reusable material. It is important to recycle because it keeps our Earth clean. Recycling also keeps trash out of the ocean. When trash ends up in the ocean the sea creatures can eat it and die if it is not biodegradable. My goal for this project is to find out where Wicomico County needs more recycling centers and how it compares to Worcester County recycling centers.

Background information:

In Wicomico County, there are 11 convenience recycling centers and nine recycling convenience drop-off centers. You can recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal. In Worcester County, there are 10 centers. Paper, cardboard, plastic, and cans are all collected.

Why did I chose to do a story map on recycling centers?

I chose to do a story map on recycling centers because recycling is really important and we need to find out where we need to add more centers, so more people will want to recycle. I found out that there are much more recycling centers in Wicomico County than in Worcester County. We live near the ocean so when we don't recycle that trash could end up in the ocean, which is not good for the sea creatures because they can die, and then we wouldn't have a beautiful beach to spend our summer days.

Statistics:

The population of Wicomico, County is 103,609 and the population of Worcester County is 52,276. As you can see, there are a lot more people in Wicomico than in Worcester. There are also more recycling centers in Wicomico because it is a recycling county. I found out that there are fewer recycling centers in Worcester, which is bad because Worcester, County borders the Atlantic Ocean.

Recycling Program at St. Francis De Sales School:

This year for the middle school science fair project, I had an idea to encourage recycling in our school and our community. My science group and I raised money in a bake sale to buy recycling bins for our school's cafeteria and class rooms. We went door to door informing people on what recycling is and how it helps our Earth. We increase recycling in our school by 60 percent. Even though the science fair is over, we still continue to encourage people to recycle everywhere because the Earth is our home and we need to protect it.
