Efforts to Improve Sediment Management at Willwood Dam

May 2022 Update

In response to an unintentional sediment release from Willwood Dam in 2016, local, state, and federal partners have been working to improve sediment management at  Willwood Dam  to best protect the downstream Shoshone River fishery. Recent projects and successes, detailed below, include: (1) improvements to the Shoshone River fishery downstream of Willwood Dam; (2) modifications to the operations of Willwood Dam; (3) efforts to better understand sediment dynamics at the dam; (4) studies evaluating the impacts of sediment on the fishery; (5) efforts to evaluate options for improvements and modifications to Willwood Dam; and (6) efforts to address sources of sediment to the Shoshone River.

Members of the public are invited to participate in Willwood Work Group meetings. Work Group 2 focuses on dam operations and primarily meets via conference calls, advertised on the Willwood Dam  listserv , at 8:30-10:00 AM on the first Friday of every month. Work Group 3 focuses on sources of sediment in the watershed and meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00-2:00 PM. Questions regarding Work Group 2 can be directed to David Waterstreet at david.waterstreet@wyo.gov or 307-777-6709. Questions regarding Work Group 3 can be directed to Carmen McIntyre at chmcintyre.ccnrd@gmail.com or 307-578-8335.
