Explore several key topics in the 2020 County Health Rankings

The  County Health Rankings , a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, measure the health of nearly all counties in the nation and rank them within states.  This feature layer  contains 2020 County Health Rankings data for nation, state, and county levels. The Rankings are compiled using county-level measures from a variety of national and state data sources. 

Here are a few maps that draw out disparities in access, opportunities, and outcomes among different races from the data.

"Life Expectancy is an Average

Life Expectancy measures the average number of years from birth a person can expect to live, according to the current mortality experience (age-specific death rates) of the population. Life Expectancy takes into account the number of deaths in a given time period and the average number of people at risk of dying during that period, allowing us to compare data across counties with different population sizes."

This map shows child poverty in the US by county, with an emphasis on the Black children living in poverty. The darkest colors in the map highlight where there are a higher percentage of Black children living in poverty. The symbol size shows the count of all children living in poverty.

Note that not all counties have data for all races, so the map will show the predominant value based on the data available.

  • The percent of all children who live below the poverty line
  • The percent of Black children who live below the poverty line

The higher rate between the two is shown by the associated color. The size of the symbol shows the count of all children living in poverty. The pattern is shown by US counties.
